Welcome back to Fuel Disclosure, the Moffitt Services podcast where we discuss our industry, our community involvement, and the inspiring work of organizations like Texas EquuSearch. Our recent conversation with founder Tim Miller offered a profound look into the relentless dedication that powers the search and rescue world.
S3 – #3 Tim Miller | Beyond the Search with Texas EquuSearch
A Relationship Built on Trust and Mission
Tim Miller, a three-time guest, joined Marketing Director Landri Sinclair and Brand Ambassador Fred Whitfield. Tim opened the discussion by sharing his immense gratitude for Moffitt’s consistent support. Specifically, he emphasized that Texas EquuSearch literally could not exist without the company’s aid. This partnership shines a light on powerful community involvement.
Fred recalled the recent devastating floods in the Texas Hill Country near Hunt, where he witnessed Tim’s organization in action for the first time. In fact, he described the devastation as unbelievable, a level he had not seen before, even after working on storms in Louisiana and Mississippi. Tim, who arrived just hours after the flood, compared the destruction to the 2005 tsunami in Sri Lanka. Therefore, the scale of the disaster immediately demanded the dedication of teams like Texas EquuSearch.
Mobilizing in the Face of Disaster
Landri Sinclair was curious about the rapid deployment of the Texas EquuSearch team. Tim explained that they do not simply “show up”; conversely, they rely on early calls and established connections with law enforcement. He detailed a heartbreaking call from a sheriff in Jasper County, leading him to a judge whose son was tragically swept away. Consequently, the immediate need for a coordinated search effort was paramount.
The stories from the Hill Country were utterly devastating. Tim recalled spending two emotional hours with counselors from Camp Mystic and noted that the reality was far worse than media reports showed. He shared the emotional toll it took on his team; indeed, they shed many tears, but they always got up the next day to continue the vital work. This unwavering spirit highlights a deep commitment to community involvement.
The Driving Force: A Father’s Promise
Fred asked Tim what keeps him going after years of searches. Tim’s answer stems from a deeply personal tragedy: the disappearance and murder of his own daughter, Laura. During the 17 agonizing months she was missing, he felt helpless. After her body was found, he made a solemn promise to God: he would never leave another family alone.
Thus, Texas EquuSearch was born. Initially, they were “hillbillies on horses,” but over 25 years, the organization has grown into a highly specialized unit. Currently, they employ ATVs, ground penetration units (which once found a woman missing for 25 years in four minutes), drones, and search dogs. The organization operates with more resources than many law enforcement agencies and has never charged a family for its services, showcasing an incredible level of community involvement.
25 Years of Community Involvement and a Look Ahead
Tim discussed the challenges of sustaining such an organization. In total, the Hill Country search saw 136 people deployed in a single day, with many volunteers sleeping in their vehicles because housing was scarce. He explained that Texas EquuSearch depends on financial donations and support roles for people who cannot handle the physical or emotional demands of searching. Fortunately, Moffitt Services alleviates one major operational expense—fuel—by being on-site within minutes of a call. This support is a powerful example of community involvement.
Tim is concerned about the organization’s future, as it has grown into a large, complex “business” and he is looking for the right person to take the reins. Despite this concern, the organization has grown its reach to 43 states and 11 countries, handling over 2,600 cases.
He stressed that his organization’s major difference is that many members, including himself, have experienced the pain of a missing loved one. They understand the heartache. The organization’s legacy of community involvement is a testament to the fact that “lost is not alone.”
How You Can Support Texas EquuSearch
Tim Miller is concerned about the financial future of the organization, especially with the current economic climate. Consequently, he implored listeners to support their upcoming 25th Anniversary Gala.
Moffitt Services is proud to recognize Roy Moffitt at the gala and is hosting its own Moffitt Legacy Foundation Golf Tournament on October 3rd to further aid Texas EquuSearch. Ultimately, every dollar donated helps keep their promise to never leave a family alone during the worst time of their lives.
